Description
The M442J takes Bartolini’s beloved 9J passive Jazz bass design and doubles down, dropping a pair of hum-cancelling J coils into a single squared soapbar housing. The result is a quad-coil pickup that plays like three basses in one, depending on how you wire it.
- Series humbucker mode: thick, growly, high-output tone for driving a room
- Parallel humbucker mode: fat and round with tight focus, similar to a J-bass with both volumes wide open
- Coil-split mode: precise, clean, classic single-coil bite
Add a toggle switch and you can flip between all three voicings on the fly — no switch needed to use it, but you’ll want the flexibility once you hear what each mode does. Every configuration stays completely hum-free, which matters when you’re plugging into an unfamiliar backline or a noisy stage.
Blade construction (instead of individual pole pieces) means these pickups stay consistent across a wide range of string spacings, so you’re not locked into one setup. Internal shielding and shielded lead wire keep the noise floor dead quiet, and the build is sweat-proof so string contact and stage sweat won’t introduce ugly noise.
Bartolini builds these specifically for neck (-B, bass) and bridge (-T, treble) positions, voiced to balance properly whether you’re blending both or soloing one on its own.
