Description
This is the rig that made “flip-top” a bassist’s shorthand for real Ampeg tone without the real Ampeg back strain. The PF-500 head crams 500W at 4 ohms into a chassis you could stash in a gig bag pocket, but nothing about the sound feels shrunk down. A MOSFET preamp feeds a Class D power section, and you get bass/mid/treble controls plus a 5-position mid selector to dial in everything from thumpy old-school warmth to cutting-through-the-mix growl. Ultra Hi/Lo boosts and an onboard compressor mean you can shape your tone on the fly instead of fighting the venue’s system for it.
Underneath the front panel is a genuinely gig-built feature set: balanced direct out, pre/post EQ switching, -40dB pad, ground lift, a footswitchable FX loop with its own mix knob, power amp in/preamp out for rig splitting, headphone out/line in, -15dB input pad, and footswitchable mute for silent tuning between songs.
The PF-115HE cab wears the black diamond tolex and vintage B-15 grille cloth that started this whole aesthetic, built around a rugged 15mm poplar ply enclosure. Inside sits a ceramic Eminence 15″ driver handling the low end alongside a 1″ HF compression driver with its own L-Pad level control, rated at 450W RMS at 8 ohms. Frequency response runs 50Hz-17kHz with a hot 99.5dB sensitivity, so it moves air efficiently without needing to be cranked past comfortable.
Set the head on top, flip it inside the cab, and you’re loaded for the van in one trip.
