Geezer Butler spent two years with EMG’s Rob Turner chasing a specific ghost: the low end that rumbles through “War Pigs,” “Iron Man,” and “Paranoid.” Not a modern reinterpretation of it — the actual thing, road-tested through Black Sabbath’s world tours until it held up under real gig conditions.
What came out the other end is this GZR-PJ set, built passive and solderless so it drops into your bass without a redesign of your electronics cavity. The P pickup runs Alnico 5 pole pieces with coils custom wound to Geezer’s spec, giving you that punch-and-grit character rather than a scooped, polite P tone.
The J half is where EMG did real work: split-coil design that cancels the 60-cycle hum classic early-70s single coil J pickups are known for, while still pushing more output and volume than a standard single coil. That means you get the hum-free reliability you want on a dark stage, without the J pickup feeling thin or weak next to the P.
