This is the bass Leo Fender was refining right before G&L came to be — and CLF Research builds it today in that same Fullerton, California factory on Fender Avenue, the birthplace of the bolt-on neck. The L-2000 wears its lineage openly: the early CLF/G&L headstock shape, the vintage-correct neck profile, reproduction CLF knobs, and an ’81-style control plate that gives the whole layout a distinctly old-school feel in hand.
What sets it apart from a straightforward reissue is what’s wired into that control plate. The Tri-Tone Preamp is an active circuit built for players who need range, not just tone — dedicated Treble and Bass controls, a Series/Parallel pickup selector switch, and a 3-position switch that handles pre-amp ON/OFF plus a treble boost. Flip through the color-coded mini toggle tips and you can go from a fat, parallel-wired low end for pocket-deep funk to a punchier series voicing for cutting through a dense mix, with the boost switch on standby for solos or slap passages that need extra bite.
It comes in one finish: Purpleburst over a swamp ash body, topped with a maple fingerboard — light, resonant wood with a bright, articulate top end that pairs well with the preamp’s added headroom.
