Description
Stuart Zender made his name as one of the UK’s most influential bassists, laying down the choppy, funked-out grooves that defined Jamiroquai’s early sound. The Ashdown Funk Face is his signature weapon, a twin dynamic filter pedal hand built in the UK Custom Shop specifically to chase that snapping, vocal-like auto-wah tone that low end players have chased for decades.
Where a lot of filter pedals get busy with menus and presets, the Funk Face keeps it down to three knobs and two switches so you can react in the moment rather than fiddling mid-song. The Sensitivity control shapes how the filter responds to your attack and dynamics, while the Output knob sets how much of that effect sits on top of your dry signal. Work the two together and you can land anywhere between a gentle filter sweep and the full in-your-face auto-wah bark the pedal is named for.
A footswitchable valve drive stage, powered by a 12AX7 tube, adds natural harmonic grit whenever you need it, and a side-mounted switch lets you choose whether that drive hits before or after the wah for two distinct flavours of dirt. The wah itself is also footswitchable, so you can sit clean and jump into the effect exactly when the groove calls for it.
True bypass switching keeps your tone uncoloured when the pedal’s off, and the Output control doubles as a clean level boost for those moments you need to punch through the mix.
