Description
The SUB Ray4 in Black takes the DNA of the Music Man StingRay and hands it to working bassists who need that classic punch without the boutique price tag. Under the hood is a high-output humbucking pickup with dual rows of large pole pieces, feeding a 2-band active preamp so you can shape your low end from warm and rounded to aggressive and cutting. Independent volume, bass, and treble controls give you real cut and boost range, meaning this bass can sit comfortably in a jazz combo one night and shove a rock mix around the next.
Build quality is where this bass earns its keep on the road. A solid hardwood body pairs with a 34″ full-scale maple neck secured by Music Man’s 6-bolt neck joint, a design chosen for its stability and tone transfer under load – your neck stays locked in place even through sweaty, high-energy sets. The neck heel is shaped for easy upper-fret access, and medium jumbo frets give you plenty of string to grab onto. A narrow 38mm nut width makes the neck fast and comfortable for players coming from guitar or those with smaller hands.
Dialing in your setup is refreshingly simple: an accessible thumbwheel truss rod adjuster at the end of the fingerboard lets you tweak relief on the fly with a small screwdriver or the included chrome bar, no string removal required. The active electronics run on a single 9-volt battery housed in an easy-open compartment on the back of the body.
