Description

Bartolini took two of their beloved 9J passive, hum-cancelling Jazz bass coils and fused them into one squared soapbar housing to build the M442J – what they call the 2J Squared Quad coil pickup. The result is a pickup that genuinely changes character depending on how you wire it, not just how you EQ it.

  • Series mode: thick, growly, high-output humbucker tone for driving through a mix
  • Parallel mode: round and fat with focus, similar to running both volumes wide open on a classic J-Bass
  • Coil-split mode: tight, clear single-coil bite

Every one of these modes stays completely hum-free – a toggle switch lets you jump between them on the fly, though the pickup works fine without one if you’d rather keep it simple. For working bassists, that’s the real win here: one pickup, three distinct voices, zero noise floor to fight with at practice or on stage.

Blade construction (rather than traditional pole pieces) means the M442J adapts to different string spacings without hunting for the sweet spot. Internal shielding and shielded cabling keep it dead quiet in loud rooms and hot studios, and it’s built sweat-proof so string slap and stage sweat won’t introduce noise into your signal.

Bartolini builds these in matched neck (-B, Bass) and bridge (-T, Treble) versions so the two pickups balance properly whether you’re blending them together or soloing one at a time.
