The EXL165 has been a staple on bass gig bags for a reason: it splits the difference between bright and heavy. D’Addario builds this hybrid set by taking the .045 and .065 high strings from the EXL170 set and mating them with the .085 and .105 low strings from the EXL160 set. The result is a string that feels easy under the fingers on the top end but still delivers a booming, tight low B-string-style thump on the bottom — without the stiffness that usually comes with going up in gauge across the board.
Each string is round wound with nickel-plated steel wrap wire on D’Addario’s digitally-controlled winding machines, so intonation stays true up and down the neck and the fundamental note comes through clear instead of getting buried in overtones. That nickel wrap also gives you the classic warm-but-articulate XL tone that works whether you’re slapping, fingerstyle, or digging in with a pick.
