Description
The DiMarzio Model J set takes the classic Fender Jazz Bass voice — that round, woody midrange growl every bassist chases — and cancels the hum without smearing the tone. This isn’t a stacked-coil design pretending to be humbucking. Each Model J pickup runs true dual coils, with one coil dedicated to each string pair, so resistance stays low and the output stays articulate instead of muddy.
Compared to a stock Jazz pickup, expect more push behind the note and a bigger, more resonant footprint — the kind of added muscle that lets the natural character of your bass come through louder, not just louder overall. Fretless players in particular get a lot out of these: back off the tone knob a touch and glissandos and vibrato take on that classic upright-style woodiness.
Want more tonal range? Run a Model J in the bridge alongside a DiMarzio Model P in the neck. The P brings the fat, warm low end; the J adds tight punch on top — a combination that covers a lot more ground than either pickup alone.
- Individually humbucking design (not stacked coils) — one coil per string pair
- 4-conductor wiring for series/parallel/split options
- Ceramic magnets
- 6.82 Kohm resistance
- Set includes two different pickup lengths (short neck, long bridge) to match original Fender Jazz Bass cavity sizes — also sold separately as DP123S (short) and DP123L (long)
- No quick connect
- Introduced in 1979
Check the dimensions before ordering if your bass uses matched-length cavities rather than the vintage Jazz Bass short/long layout.
