The P/J split is a bass player’s cheat code u2014 thump from the P, snap from the J u2014 and DiMarzio’s Sixties PJ set is their take on making that combo actually usable on stage. Both pickups are fully humbucking under sculpted nickel covers, so you get that warm, vintage-leaning voice without the 60-cycle buzz that plagues single-coil P/J setups. DiMarzio quotes 3dB of noise reduction over stock PJ pairs, which matters a lot more than it sounds like once you’re standing in front of a dimmer pack or a bad power drop at a venue.
Alnico 5 magnets are shaped to follow the curve of the covers, which keeps output even and immediate string to string instead of favoring the middle strings the way flat-magnet designs sometimes do. DiMarzio also borrowed the rounded edge and curved top profile from their Relentless pickups (the Billy Sheehan design) for these, so your picking or slap hand isn’t fighting sharp corners near the bridge. The height adjustment screws sit low, on a circuit board mounting system, keeping hardware out from under your pickguard and out of your way entirely.
Each pickup uses foil-shielded cable into potted coils for a quiet, tone-forward signal, and every Sixties P and Sixties J pickup is handmade in New York City and tested/matched before it ships.
