Catalinbread set out to nail that specific breakup, the kind that shows up on those loose, heavy “Ya-Yas” era recordings, and landed on a drive circuit that works whether you’re chasing classic rock warmth or shoving your signal into modern drop-tuned territory.
What makes the SFT worth a spot on your board is how it EQs. Instead of a basic bass/treble knob setup, you get a Baxandall-style tone stack — the same shaping philosophy used in real tube amps — so you can carve mids and dial in low-end without the drive turning to mud. Push the Stones/Stoner switch and the gain character shifts, giving you a second flavor of breakup without needing a second pedal.
Because it was built bass-first, the SFT doesn’t fall apart when you dig in low. Low B strings stay defined, drive stacks cleanly with your clean tone if you blend it right, and the overdrive holds together at gig volume instead of collapsing into flub.
