Description
Every bassist who’s thrown their back out loading in a full stack knows the appeal here: the PF-500 gives you real Ampeg tone without the real Ampeg weight. This Portaflex head puts 500W RMS into 4 ohms through a Class-D power amp paired with a MOSFET preamp, so you get that thick, articulate low end and warm midrange the brand is known for, minus the heavy iron. Run it through the matching PF Series flip-top cabs and you’ve got the classic Portaflex look and feel in a rig that actually fits in a hatchback.
Tone shaping goes well beyond basic knobs. You’ve got Bass, Mid, and Treble, plus a 5-way Mid Frequency control to dial in exactly where your instrument sits in the mix, and Ultra Hi/Ultra Lo switches for extra sculpting on either end. An onboard variable compressor smooths out your attack for slap or aggressive fingerstyle, while the dual JFET preamp and -15 dB input pad keep things clean whether you’re running passive or hot active pickups.
For gig-night practicality, there’s a footswitchable mute and effects loop, a stereo 1/8″ aux input for practicing along with tracks, a headphone out, and a balanced XLR direct out with pre/post EQ selection, -40dB pad, and ground lift for smooth DI work at front of house. Speaker output covers both Speakon and 1/4″, and the lightweight fan-cooled switching power supply with voltage selector makes this a genuinely tour-ready, travel-friendly head.
