Description
The PF-800 is proof you don’t need a heavy tube amp to get real Ampeg growl on stage. This used head takes the classic Portaflex voicing and squeezes it into a compact, road-friendly chassis that any working bassist will appreciate at load-in. MOSFET preamp feeding a Class D power section gets you 800 watts at 4 ohms, so pairing it with a couple of Portaflex cabs gives you a rig that’s both vintage-flavored and genuinely gig-ready.
Shaping your tone is straightforward but deep: bass, mid, and treble controls with a 5-position mid selector let you dial in everything from round and vintage to punchy and modern, and the Ultra Hi/Lo boosts are there when you need extra sizzle or low-end weight fast. An onboard compressor helps even out your attack without a separate pedal, and the FX loop (with its own mix control) is foot-switchable for effects on the fly. Mute is also foot-switchable, handy for silent tuning between songs.
On the practical side, you get a balanced direct out with pre/post EQ selection and a -40 dB pad for clean DI signal to the board, plus ground lift, power amp in/preamp out for splitting your rig, a 1/8″ headphone out/line in for silent practice, and a -15 dB input pad for hot active basses. The switching power supply keeps things lightweight at just 11.8 lbs, in a footprint of roughly 3 x 15 x 11 inches.
