This is a single coil design, but don’t expect vintage-thin – Bartolini voiced these with strong lows and low mids that go deeper than the classic Fender-style pickups they’re shaped to replace.
The Neck and Bridge coils are wound equally, mirroring the layout of an original Fender pair, so swapping in this set keeps your bass feeling familiar under your hands. What changes is the character coming out of the amp. The 9J1 gives you a bright, articulate Neck tone, while the #1 winding on the Bridge side pulls out extra growl – the kind of aggressive edge that cuts through a busy mix without losing low-end weight. Tonally, it sits close to Bartolini’s earlier 94J pickups, just a touch brighter at the bridge position.
A few practical notes for gigging bassists:
- Single coil construction means running the Neck or Bridge pickup solo will introduce some hum – normal for this design, not a defect.
- Bartolini’s single coils are quieter than traditional single coils, but still not the choice if you’re chasing dead-silent, noiseless electronics.
- This listing is the 9J1-LN: the Bridge (long/treble) pickup only, intended for pairing with one of Bartolini’s P-Bass pickups (models 8S or 8SU) to build a P-J configuration. If you need the #1 winding option specifically, order it as 9J-L1.
