Before G&L ever put its name on a headstock, Leo Fender was already refining the ideas that would define it — Magnetic Field Design pickups, the Saddle Lock bridge, and a preamp circuit built to handle whatever a bassist throws at it. The L-2500 revives that early CLF/G&L era with a vintage-correct headstock shape and neck profile, so it plays and looks like a piece of that original blueprint rather than a modern reinterpretation.
Details matter here: the aluminum CLF knobs are faithfully reproduced, the control plate is chrome-plated for that old-school shine, and the mini toggle switches get color-coded tips so you can find your setting by feel mid-song, no glancing down required.
Under the hood is the Tri-Tone Preamp — an active circuit giving you independent Treble and Bass controls, a Series/Parallel pickup selector, and a 3-position switch that handles preamp on/off duty plus a treble boost. That’s a lot of tonal ground covered from one bass: snap into percussive fingerstyle funk, dial up a modern fusion voice, or push into low-tuned metal territory without reaching for a pedal.
Two finish options, each with its own character:
- Old School Tobacco Sunburst over Swamp Ash, with a Caribbean rosewood fingerboard
- Purpleburst over Swamp Ash, with a maple fingerboard
Every L-2500 is still built where it all started — the CLF Research facility on Fender Avenue in Fullerton, California, the Birthplace of Bolt-on. It’s a direct line back to Leo Fender’s own design philosophy, made for players who want that lineage in their hands, not just on a spec sheet.
