Description
Built as a drop-in replacement for Gibson® EB series neck pickups, the DiMarzio Model One has since carved out its own reputation among bassists chasing serious low-end weight. Wired with 4-conductor cabling and loaded with a ceramic magnet, it puts out a solid 200mV signal with 11.31 Kohm of DC resistance — enough grunt to anchor a mix without drowning it in mud.
Where the Model One really earns its keep is in multi-pickup setups. Pair it with a Split P, DiMarzio Model P, or DiMarzio Model J pickup and you’ve essentially built a woofer/tweeter system into your bass, with the blend controlled right at your fingertips. Route the Model One’s output to an amp pushing an 18-inch cabinet and send your other pickup to your usual rig, and you get that combination of earth-moving bottom and cutting, transparent top-end that Billy Sheehan made famous — the kind of tone that shakes a room without losing definition.
On its own, expect warm, full-bodied output that stays clean. A few tips for shaping the voice further:
- Run 500K pots if you want more high-end air
- Switch the coils from series to parallel for a brighter, more open midrange — volume drops slightly, but the tone takes on a more acoustic character
Whether you’re building a dual-pickup monster rig or just want a neck pickup with real low-end authority, the Model One delivers tone that’s felt as much as heard.
