Five-string P basses need a pickup that respects the B string as much as the G, and that’s exactly what the EMG 40P is built for. Housed in EMG’s Extended 40-series shell (4 inches / 102mm wide) to properly cover a 5-string’s spacing, this active split-coil puts the treble magnet closer to the neck — the layout you’ll find on basses like Spector and Yamaha. If you’re on a traditional Fender-spec 5-string with the treble side near the bridge, EMG also offers this pickup in a reverse configuration, so check your alignment before ordering.
Under the hood, ceramic magnets paired with short, squat coils give the 40P its signature voice: punchy, tight low-end that doesn’t get muddy on the low B, crisp top-end articulation for pick or slap work, and enough midrange warmth to keep things musical in a mix. It’s an active pickup, so expect low noise floor and consistent output whether you’re tracking in the studio or fighting stage volume at a loud gig — a big reason so many touring and session players reach for it.
