’74 was the year Fender shook up the Jazz Bass formula, and this American Vintage reissue puts every one of those changes back in your hands. The neck went from a slim C-shape to a bigger, rounder U-profile that fills your palm differently on every position shift, with a walnut skunk stripe running down the back and pearl block inlays flanked by white binding lighting up the round-laminated rosewood board. Twenty vintage-style frets and that familiar 7.25″ radius keep the low-position chording easy while the wider stops feel substantial under your thumb.
Under the hood you get the four-bolt neck plate (the last year Fender used it before switching over) stamped with the F logo, bullet-style truss rod nut at the headstock, and bone nut. The alder body wears a urethane 3-Color Sunburst finish with the black/white/black pickguard that replaced the old tortoiseshell look that year, plus an upper thumb rest positioned where ’70s players actually rested their thumb.
The pickup pair is a dedicated set of American Vintage ’74 single-coils wired to the classic dual-volume-plus-master-tone layout, so you can blend neck and bridge independently for that in-between growl or lean hard into one coil for punch. Vintage-style bridge with single-groove steel barrel saddles and F-stamped chrome cover, along with ’70s-style Fender-stamped open-gear tuners, round out a bass built to feel and respond like the real thing off the truck.
