Most compressor pedals out there are just dressed-up versions of the same 60s-era Dan Armstrong circuit. Original units are rare and pricey, and honestly, circuit design has come a long way since then. Andy Fuchs set out to build something better, and the Royal Plush is the result.
Instead of the usual approach, this pedal blends IC-based circuitry with classic optical compression — the same technology found in high-end studio compressors. That combination gets you low-noise, tube-like warmth and a compression feel that stays natural, not squished or artificial. Bassists know the difference between compression that helps your groove sit right and compression that sucks the life out of your attack. This one’s built to do the former.
Where you put it in your signal chain changes what it does for you. Run it first for added sustain and a steady input level heading into your other pedals, or place it after your board to tame and even out whatever your drive and distortion pedals are throwing at it — giving you more freedom to push those effects without losing control of your overall output.
A dual polar power supply gives the Royal Plush a wide, distortion-free clean headroom, and there are no coupling capacitors in the signal path to rob your tone of detail. That means it can work as a transparent, colorless boost just as easily as a warm compressor.
