Built with Dave Ellefson’s own fingerprints on it, this Kelly Bird IV is made for players who lock into a riff and don’t let go. The basswood body wears his signature red pinstripe over gloss polyester, with black binding tracing the aggressive Kelly Bird outline — a shape that’s as much stage presence as it is playability.
The bolt-on maple neck is quartersawn and graphite-reinforced for stability under heavy attack, capped with a bound maple fingerboard, black block inlays, and 21 jumbo frets. A 12″-16″ compound radius keeps low-end chording comfortable while letting solos and fills up the neck feel just as natural. At a 34″ scale with a 1.625″ nut, it’s a familiar, road-worthy platform.
Tone comes from EMG’s active HZ35B and HZ35N pickups in an HH layout, wired to independent volume controls for each pickup plus an active 3-band EQ. That gives you real control over how much grind, growl, or clarity you send to the amp — useful whether you’re driving a wall of Marshalls or sitting in a smaller room mix. The Jackson high-mass HM-4 bridge and black die-cast tuners keep tuning stable through aggressive playing, and the tilt-back pointed headstock adds to the metal pedigree.
