Description
Every bassist knows the Ray tone when they hear it, and the S.U.B. Ray5 puts that low-end signature into a 5-string that’s ready for real gigs, not just the practice room. Finished in Walnut Satin, it’s got the workhorse feel this shop’s players actually want — comfortable, honest, and quick to lock into a pocket.
The high-output humbucker is voiced for clarity over coloration, with two rows of large pole pieces pulling every bit of string detail into the onboard 2-band active preamp. Whether you’re digging in for a slap-heavy set or laying back on a warm, rounded groove, the bass and treble cut/boost controls give you the range to shape it fast between songs.
Neck stability matters more once you add a fifth string, and the 6-bolt neck joint here is doing real work — it keeps things locked in tight under load so your tone transfer stays solid night after night. The neck heel is carved out of the way too, so reaching up into the higher register on that 34″ scale doesn’t feel like a fight. A narrow 38mm nut width keeps the low B manageable for players coming from 4-string.
Setup is refreshingly low-hassle: the truss rod adjuster is right at the end of the fingerboard, no tools or string removal required, so you can dial in relief between sets. The 9-volt battery compartment for the active preamp is just as straightforward to access from the back of the body.
