Description
If you’ve been chasing that elusive J-bass growl – the kind with real low-end authority instead of thin, brittle top – the Bartolini 9J1 L/S set is worth a serious look. This is a proper replacement pair for Fender Jazz Bass® (J Bass®) style instruments, sized correctly for the neck and bridge positions: a ‘long’ pickup for the bridge and a ‘short’ for the neck, matching the original unequal J-bass footprint (neck at 3-5/8″ long, bridge at 3-3/4″ long).
Bassists and builders have leaned on this set for years because of what it does in the low end – deep, strong lows with a solid low-mid presence that gives notes real body without getting muddy. Part of Bartolini’s Original Series, these are passive pickups with a dual in-line coil design for hum-cancelling performance on stage. Each pickup is epoxy-potted, which kills unwanted microphonics and feedback so you get a clean, focused signal even at higher stage volumes.
Before you order, check your current pickups’ physical dimensions. Standard J-basses use one short and one long pickup, but some modern builds run two long pickups – if that’s your setup, you’ll want the LN (long neck) version made specifically for that neck position rather than a standard bridge pickup. A small number of basses also use two short pickups. Matching the correct lengths is the difference between a drop-in fit and a routing headache.
