Bassists who’ve chased overdrive tone know the usual problem: pedals built for guitar either swallow your low end or turn to mud the second you dig in. The Hot Wax sidesteps that by combining two proven EHX circuits — the full-range Crayon overdrive and the Hot Tubes, a reissue of their classic ’70s CMOS overdrive — into a single dual-stage box that was voiced with bass in mind as much as guitar.
Run either side on its own for two distinct flavors, or stack them with the Crayon feeding into the Hot Tubes to build something bigger than either circuit alone. That’s where the Hot Wax really shows its range, taking you from a light touch of grit to a thick, saturated wall of drive without losing definition.
The onboard Bass and Treble EQ knobs give you real shaping power over the tone once you’re in drive mode, letting you tighten up the low end or add bite up top depending on your rig. Just as important for four (or five, or six) stringers is the Blend knob, which lets you mix your clean signal back in underneath the dirt — a must-have if you want the growl of overdrive without sacrificing the punch and note definition your low end relies on. All three controls stay active whenever one or both drive sections are engaged, and bypass cleanly when the pedal is off.
Switching between settings is quiet and pop-free, so you can flip sections mid-song without the audience noticing anything but your tone getting bigger.
