Bassists chasing that classic Music Man growl but wanting more flexibility need to look at the EMG-MMTW. Built off the DNA of EMG’s triple-coil 89 guitar pickup, the MMTW packs two complete pickups into one housing: a single-coil voice and a dual-coil voice, both fully noiseless thanks to EMG’s active circuitry. Flip between them with the included push-pull pot (wired for volume or tone control) or swap in a DPDT switch if you’d rather keep things simple.
The ceramic-and-steel magnet combo is EMG’s signature setup for a reason—it delivers top end that stays smooth and musical instead of harsh, while the low end goes deep and heavy without turning muddy. Wide-spread bobbins (1 inch apart) paired with a generous coil surface area, the same layout used in the MM-CS, are what give this pickup its outsized low-frequency punch. Switch over to the single-coil side and you’re getting the same voice as EMG’s Jazz Bass (J) Pickup—strong, present mids that cut through a mix. If you’re wiring up a one-pickup bass and need it planted in the sweet spot, this is built for exactly that job.
Heads up for builds using two MMTW pickups: each one needs its own push-pull pot to toggle coil modes, so BT or BQ balance systems won’t fit in the wiring. Want balance control anyway? Wire the coil switching through a DPDT toggle instead and keep the balance pot for blending pickups.
