This is the ’58 spec, the year Fender first dressed the Precision Bass in Three-Color Sunburst — a look that’s basically synonymous with “P-bass” ever since. Fender’s American Vintage series doesn’t just chase the finish, though; it chases the whole feel of a late-50s bass, and that’s where this one earns its keep on a gig.
Start with the body: lightweight alder, so you’re not fighting the instrument by set three. Bolted to it is a thick 1-piece maple neck with a Large “C” profile that fills your hand the way old-school P-basses do — nothing thin or modern-feeling here. 20 vintage-style frets, black dot inlays, a 7.25″ fingerboard radius, and a 1.735″ nut width round out the playing feel, with a vintage-style heel-adjust truss rod keeping things period-correct even in the details you don’t see.
The heart of the tone is the new American Vintage ’58 split single-coil pickup — punchy, woody, and built to sit low and solid in a mix, exactly what you want from a P-bass. It runs through simple Volume and Tone controls via flat-top knurled chrome knobs, no distractions.
Vintage touches carry through the hardware: threaded steel “barrel” saddles on the bridge, a bone nut, reverse open-gear tuners, and mounted chrome pickup and bridge covers for that unmistakable old-school silhouette. A lower-mounted finger rest and gold anodized aluminum pickguard with a lacquer finish complete the look. Strung with Fender USA Super Bass 7250ML strings (.045-.100).
