Description
If you’ve ever wanted that classic Music Man low-end snarl but needed a fifth string to cover the full range, the Ray5 is the answer – and this used one in Walnut Satin is ready to earn its keep on stage. The rosewood fingerboard sits atop a 34″ scale maple neck locked into the body with a 6-bolt joint, so nothing shifts or twists when you’re leaning into a groove night after night.
Tone comes from a high-output humbucker feeding an active 2-band preamp – bass and treble each get full cut and boost, so you can dial in everything from a round, vintage thump to an aggressive, modern edge. The pickup’s 3-screw mounting lets you fine-tune height and angle to match the string radius, squeezing out every bit of clarity the coil can offer.
Setup is refreshingly painless: a thumbwheel truss rod adjuster at the end of the fingerboard means you can tweak neck relief on the fly with a small screwdriver, no string removal required. Swapping the 9-volt for the preamp is just as quick via the rear battery door – unplug your cable between sessions and you’ll get months of use out of it.
