The Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS takes the offset-waist Jaguar body and shrinks the scale to a slinky 30″, making it a natural fit for players with smaller hands, anyone nursing wrist fatigue, or just bassists who want a neck that feels fast under the fingers. Don’t mistake it for a toy, though — the split-coil Precision pickup in the middle position gives you that thick, woody low-end thump, while the Jazz-style single-coil at the bridge adds snarl and bite. Roll between them, or blend both with the master tone control, and you’ve got a surprisingly wide tonal palette for a bass this size.
The Agathis body wears a Candy Apple Red poly finish over a slim “C”-shaped neck with a rosewood board, 20 medium jumbo frets, and a 9.5″ radius — smooth for chords, fast for runs. Chrome hardware, a standard 4-saddle bridge, and open-gear tuners keep things simple and reliable, while black Jazz Bass knobs and a black-painted headstock give it a subtly menacing look.
Paired with it here is the Ampeg BA108, a compact combo that punches well above its size. It runs Ampeg’s own preamp and tone stack circuitry, so you get real Ampeg voicing — not a watered-down imitation — through a single 8″ speaker rated at 20 watts into 4 ohms. The cabinet’s 60° monitor angle throws sound up toward your ears instead of your shins, which matters at low-volume gigs, rehearsals, and practice sessions alike. Rugged steel chassis, thick Tolex, and metal corners mean it can handle being thrown in the car for lessons or a coffeehouse gig.
